How Persistence can get you to where you want to be.

27th November 2015

Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, not even me, the words spoken by Chris Gardner to his young son in the film, In Pursuit of Happyness (and yes it is spelt right) an amazing thought provoking film which is one of my favourites of all time.

It tells the story of one man’s struggle to survive as a working homeless person with his young toddler son in tow after his wife walked out on them both and covers his tough life bringing up young  Christopher whilst working as a medical sales rep, studying to be a stock broker and living on the streets of San Francisco with only a few dollars in his pocket.

It’s a heart wrenching true story but it’s one that tells you that if you want something enough you must never give up no matter how hard life gets for you.

Today Mr Gardner is the Chief Executive of Gardner Rich a multimillion dollar brokerage with offices in New York and Chicago. He’s an avid philanthropist and motivational speaker, a long way from the guy who was living in subway toilets. You may say he is living proof of what can be achieved if you just keep going and believe in your own abilities.

No matter who you are there will always be times when you think you have the world against you and you are never going to achieve what you want to achieve, but having an attitude like that won’t get you what you want. At times you can be surrounded by negative people, those people that try to tell you that you can’t do something, and if you let them they can drain you of all your positive spirit.

It’s another example of how you must keep going no matter what!

Having a plan of how you are going to get there and sticking to it no matter how tough life gets is the starter, coupled with persistence and a never give up attitude is more likely to get you to where you want to be.

The Chris Garner story is an incredible one, harrowing and tear jerking at times but feel good in the end, but the message throughout is a powerful one of positivity, of persistence, of learning from bad experiences from the past and refusing to give in no matter how tough life becomes. In Chris’s story, his reason is his young son, and the desire to make sure that he is always there for him guiding and supporting him, something that he didn’t have himself as a young child.

No matter what you want to achieve in life, there has to be a reason. And the reason is as individual as you or me, and the reason is your own.

For me it’s all about creating a good life for me and my family, this has always been my personal driver, and the primary reason I work so hard.

So going back to the title of this blog, Chris Gardner is trying to re-enforce the idea to his son of making sure he doesn’t listen to the negative people that he will come into contact with every day and to make sure he drives onwards towards his dream and desires whatever they may be.

So… don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, not even me!
